Richard Collins

From time to time we need some support or want the space to speak freely, without being judged or told what you should or shouldn't be doing.  I have always had a passion in helping others, and this has been a theme throughout my career, whether that was in a shop, a pub or a forensic mental health unit. I always felt most comfortable spending time listening and being there for others.I studied psychology at Teesside University before going on to work in a variety of roles in the NHS. I learned a lot about myself during my time at Roseberry Park Hospital, helping those with mental health and learning difficulties in their daily living. I recently started working with an Employee Assistance Program, offering helpline support and counselling to range of different people. For nearly 7 years I had been working with a military charity, during which I completed my counselling training. Since then I have worked with a range of issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction and relationship concerns. I work from a Person Centred model but also have extensive training in Compassion Focused Therapy. I offer a calm, safe space where you can talk at your own pace, exploring with curiosity whatever is on your mind.

Working with a Person Centred Counsellor

What does that mean?

Approach

Counselling provides a relationship in which you can feel safe to reflect on your issues and concerns to find a way forward. Person-centred therapy allows clients to reflect and discover the ways they perceive themselves, rather than how a counsellor can interpret their unconscious thoughts. This allows the client to explore their own concerns or issues, without judgement but with warmth and empathy. A key feature of therapy is the relationship between the client and the therapist, we offer a supporting and calm environment which helps form a trusting and lasting relationship, without judgement.
